ELKHART – In honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week Michiana Homes for Heroes recognized Dan Schaefer, training coordinator for the Elkhart Communications Center, for going above and beyond in service to the community through his dedication on the job.
In a letter to the organization, Michelle Miller, director of the communication center, wrote to nominate Schaefer for the award.
“I have selected an employee I feel is deserving of the Hero Award. The employee is the Training Coordinator Dan Schaefer,” Miller wrote.
Schaefer has done a lot of work with his position to help the entire department grow.
“He was promoted to the position of Training Coordinator on Feb. 20, 2016. Since that time, he has completely restructured the training program for new dispatchers,” Miller wrote. “This necessary and very needed change has allowed for the uniform and consistent training of dispatchers within the center over the past two years.”
Schaefer also worked on other tasks while restructuring the program. Including the ongoing training of current dispatchers and continuing his own education to continue to grow in the position.
“He has quickly become a leader within the department that recognizes the benefits and importance of good training, positive attitude and leading by example,” Miller wrote. “It is for that reason that I feel he is well qualified to be the recipient of this award.”
Schaefer was presented the Hero Award as a surprise on Tuesday morning at the center.
