WaNee prepares for paving projects

NAPPANEE – Construction projects were the focal point of the WaNee School Board meeting on April 9.

This summer the district plans to begin paving projects at NorthWood Middle School and Wakarusa Elementary School. Approval to advertise bids came out during the April 9 board meeting. Hopes are that the new pavement will last 15-18 years.

Projects at the high school are coming along ahead of schedule for the most part. Renovations that were planned for this summer in the small engines and robotics lab have already begun, and the jewelry and metal room will also begin this summer. The choir room is prepared and classes have moved in, and the ensemble room is expected to be finished in the next few weeks. The pool corridor stairs and ceilings are being painted.

After that, the only projects left this summer at the high school will be the cafeteria and gym floors, air conditioning to the old gymnasium and tennis court construction. While many of the individual projects are ahead of schedule, the actual completion date has been pushed back to mid-August.

WaNee Community Schools will be entering into an agreement with Baugo Community Schools for usage of the NorthWood High School pool. Jimtown High School will begin their own swim team next school year and has plans to build their own pool, but not right away. As they build their team, they’re hoping to lease the pool at NorthWood.

Scot Croner, WaNee Schools Superintendent, told the board that a number of other districts nearby, including Fairfield use this system and it generally works well for both parties. Baugo hopes to only use the pool space for the 2018-19 school year.

It was explained to the board that, as a nonprofit, Baugo Community Schools would not be charged for their usage if they practice at the same time as the NorthWood team. Should Jimtown have a need for alternative practice times, they would be expected then to cover the costs for additional custodial services or utilities.

The April 23 board meeting is cancelled due to lack of expected attendance and a short agenda. The next meeting of the WaNee School Board of Trustees will be held at 6:15 p.m. May 14 at the WaNee Community Schools Administration Building.
