Four injured in head-on crash

AMBOY — A head-on crash on a rural, country road sent four people to the hospital Monday afternoon, including a 9-year-old child.

State police say Melissa Smith, 41, Peru, was driving a Chevy pickup truck north on 300 East at around 3:55 p.m. when she crossed the center line and slammed head-on with a Ford Escape driven by Kenneth Hughes, 74, Amboy.

Police said the pickup truck traveled nearly 100 feet before rolling on its side on the west side of the road. The Escape came to rest immediately after impact.

Smith and a 9-year-old passenger were transported to Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru with non-life-threatening injuries. Hughes and his wife were also taken to the same hospital with injuries.

Police said Tuesday afternoon all four people are in stable condition.
