Lake County approves improvements for jail ahead of DOJ visit

Department of Justice officials will visit the Lake County Jail next week, and the Sheriff’s Department says recent progress could help clear the facility of federal oversight.

This week, the Board of Commissioners and County Council approved a series of requests aimed at filling gaps at the jail, including new staff and physical improvements, and potentially moving the facility toward clearing Department of Justice supervision.

“I think we’re cautiously optimistic,” said Warden Michael Zenk, who was hired last month. “This will help us moving forward.”

The county ratified a new contract with the correctional officers; hired a psychiatric nurse practitioner; and is set to begin some needed repairs to the jail.
