Two treated for injuries after semi-trucks crash

ELKHART — A two-vehicle crash involving semi-trucks led to minor injuries Tuesday morning, the Indiana State Police reported.

The crash happened about 6:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road, just east of the Elkhart/ St. Joseph County line.

A preliminary investigation by the ISP indicates that a white 2018 Freightliner, operated by Carlos Enrique Padron Ceballos, 62, was stopped on the shoulder while the driver was checking out a problem with his tires. It was struck by a westbound white 2015 Freightliner, operated by Robert Lewandowski, 54.

The collision caused most of the cab of Lewandowski’s semi to be ripped off. The use of his seatbelt kept him in his exposed seat and from being thrown from the cab. Ceballos semi was thrown into the north ditch as a result of the crash, the ISP news release states, and Cebellos was bumped into the ditch.

Both drivers were transported to the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

The right lane of the Indiana Toll Road remained closed for removal of both semis at the 87.5-mile marker west.

The ISP was assisted by Clay Territory Fire and EMS, ITRCC Maintenance, SunPro and Moore’s Towing.
