Stephen was born on January 8, 1968 in Bloomington, Ind., the son of William and Dorothy (Knipstine) Summitt, who were both there to welcome him home.
Stephen grew up in
Stinesville and Ellettsville. He was very active in his community and loved knowing and helping the people around him. He was big-hearted, generous and loved all his family.
Stephen was a volunteer for several years at the Bean Blossom Fire Department and even became chief for a period of time.
Stephen was a Christian and had attended the Old Dutch Church in Stinesville. He was well known for being a history buff in the area.
Stephen graduated from Edgewood High School in Ellettsville, in 1986, where he had enjoyed being a big part of the marching band. He received his BA in Elementary Education from Oakland City College in 1991 and a Master’s Degree from ISU in Elementary Reading Education in 2003. He taught at Spencer- Owen Schools for 23 1/2 years; all at Gosport and Patricksburg.
He was currently teaching Art, Music and PE where we have already heard this from his staff: “He was a beloved member of ours for many years. His love of the students and school was apparent by the way he treated each of them! Steve always had a smile on his face! He had an interesting history fact to share with anybody that he met. If you wanted to know anything about Stinesville or Gosport history you just needed to ask Steve. We loved him and already miss him greatly.”
Stephen is survived by his sisters, Judy Arthur (Jerry) and Mary Ellen Smith; sister-in-law, Linda Summitt; four nieces, Heather Stuffle (Bryan), Melissa Ringler (Lance), Lora Arthur and Dana Peabody (Royce); five nephews, Matthew Turner (Josephine), Dustin Turner, Jason Summitt (Amanda), Tyler Summitt (Amber), and Cory Smith, plus many “great” nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Larry Dean Summitt.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at Old Dutch Church on Old Dutch Church Road with Pastor Dan Knipstine officiating. Burial will be at Old Dutch Cemetery following the services. Visitation will be at Chandler Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday and again one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
